Aerie Gets Real

Aerie Gets Real

Through many decades the societal ideal of the women’s bodies have changed in many ways, and it seems to keep changing right before our eyes everyday. Today in society we think of the “ideal body image” women may say their dream look or body image would be the flawlessly beautiful Victoria Secret models like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner that look perfect in their advertisements, social media and runway shows. In reality those women, who yes are gorgeous, but they themselves don’t necessarily look exactly like their pictures in real life, giving everyday women the false idea of body images that they may want to strive for. Photoshop has changed our perspective of what we dream of looking like, even though it is not how the models look themselves. In 2014 The #AerieReal campaign came about and it could possibly change the body ideal image for women. Their models have various body shapes and they also do not retouch their pictures for advertisements, making women of various body types feeling comfortable in their own skin.
Aerie, the sister store of American Eagle that sells lingerie and sleep wear, they are certainly setting themselves apart from competitors like Victoria’s Secret and their sister store PINK. The #AerieReal campaign that features more relatable, realistic, non-retouched models of various body types and sizes, compared to the “perfectly” thin Victoria Secret models. This campaign is heading in the direction of empowering women of all shapes and sizes that would possibly change the body image ideals for women today.
This campaign is empowering girls to feel better and have better confidence about themselves and their bodies. Iskra Lawrence and Barbie Ferreira are both plus size models of Aerie and they are delivering powerful messages. In these YouTube videos they briefly talk about what the Aerie campaign means to them and how they feel about the way women’s bodies are viewed and how this campaign can help other girls out their who are struggling with their bodies and give them girls who are like them to look up too.
In Barbie’s video she says how…
“Knowing that’s what I look like without anyone’s perception of what my body needs to look like. The world needs more women who are so strong, especially a lot of friends that I have.”
Barbie’s message for being an Aerie model is showing girls that you should be confident and love your body no matter how other people view you or about how you might feel about your own body. The “real you is sexy”, and that everyone should embrace their “flaws” and insecurities, because who doesn’t have them. (People)

Like Barbie’s video, Iskra Lawrence gets emotional saying that time and time again she was told she “Wasn’t good enough” because of her curvy body type, but Aerie came along and told her that she was beautiful because she was herself, and that there is no reason to retouch pictures because again one of their main slogans is “the real you is sexy.” She says that there is no reason to not be confident, if you feel good wearing clothes, be confident in yourself, do not let anyone tell you how you should be feeling about yourself, because “the real you is beautiful”.             Society today can be harsh when it comes to body types and how people see other peoples’ bodies. In Susan Bordo’s article “Reading the Slender Body” she talks about Slenderness and Contemporary Anxiety where a magazine ran a study where people showed a picture of a thin super model with altered wide hips to a group of young boys who said the model with wide hips was considered “fat”, just because of the altered hips. (Bordo331) This shows that our culture can mold our way of thinking of what is considered the ideal body type for women. If Aerie can change the mindset of the ideal body type for women, it could benefit our society in many ways, women will feel more confident with themselves and their mental thinking. Women should not let the thought of what men think about their bodies affect their confidence, because what women body image ideals are based off what men are seeing in the media. In the early 2000’s photoshopped, super skinny body type was the ideal look, morphing the body ideals then. The #AerieReal campaign can now make it so there is no ideal body shape that women should feel like they should look like, they should feel confident with what their body is weather they are a size 14 or a size 4, your body is beautiful and being yourself and being confident is sexy, and we should let other people tell us how we should look or how we should feel about yourselves.

  1. I did my blog post on the same topic and I really enjoyed reading your perspective of aerie real. I feel as though this is such a hot topic in society because many advertisements are so unrealistic for young girls and women. It is putting a major amount of pressure on girls each and everyday. Having a campaign that is finally "real" and relatable really does help girls feel good about themselves. So many people are lacking confidence and aerie is making every effort to help young girls feel good about themselves with realistic models. I liked how you integrated the videos into your blog as well!

  2. I enjoyed how you pointed out the flaws in other advertisements regarding the near perfect physical appearance of women in them. I think it is time for more advertisements to be more like aerie real because most people do not look like Supermodels (most of the supermodels do not even look like that) and most individuals will relate to that advertisement versus for example, the Victoria's Secret advertisements. I liked how you added your own view as well!

  3. I also did my blog on body image. I loved reading your view point on Aerie. It gives women a sigh of relieve seeing that models are humans that has flaws instead of being touched up to perfection. Women will relate more to Aerie than Victoia Secret because their advertisement of the product is more attainable for the average women.

  4. I really enjoyed this blog about body image because it touches upon current issues in today's society about social media and what the expected body should look like. Our culture is more concerned about what the ideal body image should look like and not how the person feels. With this Aerie ad and campaign it lets people know that even though you don't have the perfect body you can still be confident and feel right about yourself. Most iconic celebrities have touch-ups done to them and editing done to their pictures to make them look more "right". And I agree with a comment from up above that this idea of the right image puts a lot of pressure on individuals, especially younger girls in their late teens. It is nice to see that some celebrities will post pictures on social media without any touch-ups or even make-up one. These ads and campaigns should be targeted towards every women, not just women who have the "perfect body".

  5. I think what Aerie deserves a huge "way to go" for this campaign. They picked up on the idea that women have judged themselves for so long because of what they see in the media- on TV, in movies, magazines, social media (just to name a few) and ran with it. No one deserves to see another person in the media and then judge themselves because they don't look the same or aren't the same size. I like how Aerie took the leap of faith and decided to show women that they are beautiful just the way they are by using advertisements and campaigns that are clothing related. A lot of women are aware of Aerie's brand and knowing that they are there to support body image is super helpful and positive. Everyone deserves to feel confident in their own skin and this campaign only encourages that people feel this way.

  6. I recently started following Aerie on Instagram. I love how the use models who do not have a perfect body image. I think that Aerie is taking a step in the right direction to showing that all body types/sizes are beautiful. I love seeing their posts on Instagram because it makes me realize that ok, not every model has a 'perfect' body. I think that more brands should wake up and start realizing that not everyone looks like a skinny model.

  7. I feel that Aerie doing this campaign is very critical to our society today. We are taught that we have to look a certain way through many outlets including the media. It is nice to see a media outlet say that you are beautiful the way that you look, and that you do not need to compare yourself to the supermodel on the front cover of a magazine. Our minds have definitely been molded to think a certain way as you mentioned in our post, and Aerie doing this campaign is a step into unmolding the way our minds are today.

  8. I love this! I was not even aware that Aerie was doing his sort of campaign. We definitely need to change the way people view women's bodies in today's society and Aerie is taking a step in the right direction. Using these more realistic and untouched models is a way of telling society that we all do not need to be super thin and perfect o be beautiful.

  9. This is a great blog! I recently followed Iskra lawrence on social media and I can really see through her pictures the message Aerie is portraying about loving yourself. Society is obsessed with making women thin and making them think they need to be skinny to get that "perfect" body. Empowering campaigns like Aerie give a real look of what it is like to be a woman in society and lets us know that it is okay to be happy wth your body and yourself. I wonder if lingerie brands have said anything against Aerie.

  10. Great blog! I think aerie real is great for advertising the "real" women of today. I think that in todays society we look at a stick skinny girl as beautiful when in reality those girls are very unhealthy and should not be idolized. This is why aerie real is such a great way to market beauty to society. I hope other lingerie and retail brands start to go this direction as well.
